What is Micropoetry?

Micropoetry | Haiku | Gogyohka | Tanka | Senryu | Twaiku | 1-6 lines | 3-10 words

Micropoetry is a genre of poetic verse which is characterized by its extreme brevity. In other words, a micropoem is a short poem.

Micropoetry is a collective term for a variety of different forms of short poetry. As a poetic artform, it doesn’t really have any rules. Although it does consists of certain forms of short poetry with fixed rules such as haiku, tanka, senryu and gogyohka. There are also no real character length limitations either. The limits are set by the medium with which they are being shared, and also that invisible line where micropoetry becomes a regular length poem. This is why the majority of poems on this site are less than 140 characters (twitter limit), with a maximum of 160 characters (mobile phone limit).

MICROPOETRY ON TWITTER

Twitter is probably the most popular place to discover micropoetry online. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of twitter micropoets who share their ‘140 characters or less’ poetry online. The problem is that it can be hard to discover the poets and their micropoetry from the billions of messages shared on twitter. Poets do sometimes label their work with hashtags to help. But as there are so many forms/styles of micropoetry, and with the limited twitter space, tags can vary wildly and sometimes poems are not tagged at all.  This makes discovering poetry on twitter quite a task.

MICROPOETRY DESCRIPTIONS & THEIR HASHTAGS

In this section of Micropoetry.com, I have tried to list all the different types of micropoetry that you’ll discover on twitter, with descriptions, hashtag variants and examples. Below is a huge list. To make sense of these hastags I have broken them into three categories. Certain tags may appear more than once. Please click on a hashtag to find out more.

NOTE: I also list twitter poets who post regular micropoetry on twitter.
